Established in 1980 as Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation, KL University initially began as one of the first private engineering colleges in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
The university was named after Koneru Lakshmaiah, a renowned industrialist, educationalist and philanthropist. The university attained autonomous status in 2006 and in 2009 was named KL Deemed to be University. Although popularly known as KL University, officially the name of the university still appears as KL Deemed to be University.
